Mask Theatre

The silence with masks is heavy. How can I lighten it?

There need not be silence in Mask Theatre. Masks and music were made for each other.  Music is like a film soundtrack for a mask.  It can either be specific for the mask ie; music it hears and responds to, like a dance track.  Or it’s music that underpins the action.  This can be very strong, or repetitive, or non-specific in its emotional pull.  I like to use minimalist music in rehearsal.  Try the soundtrack from Amelie, or Music for Three Pianos by Harold Budd (Spotify), or anything by Philip Glass.  In the early stages of getting kids into mask it’s always good to have some ABBA handy to get their characters trying to dance. Hilarious.
